Off Day for Philadelphia Phillies Gives a Chance to Analyze

With the Phillies getting a day off today today will serve as an opportunity to get a little caught up around here. I didn't post anything yesterday as I was getting caught up on some real life errands around the home, but today will be a chance to do some work on the site.

The Phillies dropped their game yesterday against the Cincinatti Reds by a score of 8-4 but the game had some good things happen for the Phillies. For starters, pun intended, Cole Hamels had his second start of the spring.

Hamels went 2.2 innings and allowed two runs to score on two hits (a two run home run by Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan included) but also struck out three in his first Grapefruit game. Hamels is still on track to be the opening night starter and feels good.

Ryan Howard hit his fourth home run of the spring while going 2-for-3 on the day. It seems as though Howard is off to a good start which will hopefully continue against full time major league pitching when the team comes north.

Prospect Jason Donald, who had been struggling at the plate, had a fine outing against the Reds. Donald went 3-for-4 in the game.

John Mayberry Jr. got the day off. The day before against Atlanta Mayberry went 0-for-4 with three strike outs. Mayberry leads the team in strike outs with nine (Howard has five), perhaps cooling off some of the ho talk about making the opening day roster.

Pedro Feliz may make a return to the team on the field soon. He is scheduled to participate in a scrimmage on Wednesday.

As for Chase Utley, he is still a little ways away from game action, even in spring. The team is hopeful that both players will be on the opening day roster though. Utley may get into some games towards the end of the month if all goes well.
